MONICA IS GONNA KILL YOU!

Hello you all!

Há algum tempo escrevi um post vocês tantando ajudá-los a usar / entender gonna. Se alguém ainda não leu as dicas é só clicar aqui e aqui.

Hoje a dica com gonna é um pouco diferente. Será que usamos gonna só para falar de planos futuros? Vamos assistir aos snippets abaixo antes de continuarmos:

Será que o Joey está falando de algo que a Monica planejou ou de algo que ele está prevendo que a Monica irá fazer?

Como já podemos imaginar, é claro que a Monica não planejou "matar" o Chandler. Joey, pela bagunça que está vendo, consegue já saber de antemão que a Monica ficará muito, mas muito brava - é por esse motivo que ele fala: Monica is gonna kill you. Ele está prevendo o que vai acontecer com base em uma evidência bem óbvia - a bagunça na casa. 

Então quando usamos gonna + verb (be + going to + verb) para fazer "previsões para o futuro"? Sempre que tivermos uma evidência clara do que está prestes a acontecer. Por exemplo:

01. O céu está preto: 
It's gonna rain.

02. Uma criança está comendo muito, muito chocolate: 
He is gonna get sick.

03. Você está muito enjoado e sente que vai vomitar (ugh!): 
I'm gonna throw up.

Vale também lembrar que nem todo mudo pronuncia going to como gonna. Assista ao Sheldon tentando consolar a Penny e veja como ele pronuncia going to.

FRIENDS - ROSS'S TAN (Season 10 - Episode 3)

There are many things people would do just to look good, and here you're going to watch what some people do to get that summer tan so many love: Ross is going to get a spray-on tan. Why do you think people need to do it anyway?

What was reason enough for them to laugh was the fact that both Chandler and Ross either did or will make use of beauty treatments to look better. 

Some questions for further discussion:

1. Do you think that it is wierd when a guy wants to go to a beauty salon and do some treatments to enhance his appearance?
2. Why isn't it easily accepted that guys can as well make the most of beauty treatments?
3. Can it be considered prejudice when people don't accept it when a guy wants to have his armpits waxed, or his eyebrows modeled, for example?
4. How much money does your guy / you (if you're a guy!) spend on beauty?
5. Which beauty products does he / do you own? Shampoo, soap and deodorant don't count
6. Which beauty treatments does he / do you do?
7. Is there anything you would like your husband / boyfriend to do, but he just won't because it's "too girly" and "he is a man"?
8. Is there anything you would like to do but you're ashamed?
9. Try to name some things a guy can do when going to a beauty salon. Is this list longer or shorter than a woman's list?
10. In your opinion, are guys who turn to beauty treatments just showing they are not confident enough?

Thinking about the video now...

1. Why do you think they react the way they react?
2. Why are they ashamed?
3. Why would Chandler like his getting a pedicure to be a secret?
4. Why does Monica use it as a weapon to get back at him when Chandler spill the beans?
5. Why didn't Monica want Chandler to tell people she was getting a spray-on tan?

BLOSSOM: SEX, LIES AND TEENAGERS

Hey you guys! it certainly hasn't been an ordinary day today... It was kind of melancholic and I, all day long, caught myself thinking about the old times.

One of the sweetest memories I have from my early teen years is watching this show - Blossom. I Remember I used to love it, and I wouldn't miss it for the world. Most of the girls my age have probably felt the same.

By watching some episodes I got to look back to my past with a totally different perspective - not of a teen going through all of those typical situations anymore, but kind of like the grown up - which was weird, by the way.

Then, and this part some people might consider even more nonsense than watchin Blossom, I decided to watch it with a third look: the English teacher one. This show is so familiar to me that I hadn't stopped to think about the fact that when I first watched it it was not in English.

Take some time and watch it: you're either identify with it or remember some good old days. And if neither happen, you're going to have the chance to learn some good idioms and more.

After watching, answer some comprehension questions just to make sure you, besides understanding the situation as a whole, also got all of the details.

My point should already be crystal clear by now. However, let me point some things out once again: I've just done what I've been bugging you guys to do. And what is it? Studying real English, choosing that topic, show, song, or whatever that interests you and study it. When you do something with pleasure you not only work your intellectual brain, but also your emotional brain; by doing it you're more likely to retain information and enjoy studying. Better yet: it's probably going to hit you that studying can be, and should be, all about having fun. I'm not just saying it, I mean it. It does work.

DARIA - THE INVITATION

More often than you may think, a simple cartoon can help you see lots of the things you learn in context. It's true that DARIA is not a very simple cartoon, but if you pay close attention to what the characters say, you're going to have the chance to learn some things you would probably have lots of difficulties finding out in a dictionary.
